Mission difficulty is categorized as easy, medium, and hard. Successfully completing jobs for syndicates results in the player gaining respect with that syndicate, allowing them to take on more difficult (but also more rewarding) jobs.

Each level features two unique syndicates, aside from the third syndicate present in all levels. Players can take on jobs from syndicates. In GTA 2, players ca save their game during a playthrough of a level by visiting the Jesus Saves church they start at (although this will cost a certain number of points). There are police records on the Grand Theft Auto 2 website showing dates that put them taking place in the year 2013, but the in-game radio host Johnny Riccaro mentions 1990s tropes, including the Y2K bug, which implies the game takes place in 1999. However, the year the game takes place is inconsistent. It contrasted vibrant color palette with the advanced sci-fi weaponry, post-war architecture, vehicles and transportation.Īll the civilian vehicles are retro modified versions of popular cars and trucks built up to the 1960s, adding even more retro-futuristic influences. The details in the environments and objects in the game are highly stylized with a retro-futuristic design. GTA 2 takes place in a large city, vaguely called the Anywhere City. Another version was also released for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, though heavily toned down.

There was also a version for the Dreamcast console which included Windows PC features omitted from the PlayStation version due to the latter’s hardware limitations. It was released on October 22, 1999, by developer Rockstar North (then known as DMA Design) for Windows PC and the Sony PlayStation (PSX).

Summary: You've got the go ahead to get the Free PC versions of these games from "other" places.Following up from the first Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto II (also called GTA II or GTA 2) builds on the original but with some new tricks up its sleeve.

Standing wise, since the game was given away for free and only taken down for tech reasons, you can feel free to download the PC version ONLY from "other" places, you should be able to find a link to the repackaged free versions in various "other" places, again, GTA2 is fine, for GTA1, the repackaged version contains lower quality audio for the music (Original release used CD audio where as the repacks used 22.05Khz/16bit LPCM), so if you want to get the full CD quality audio, you can find that in "other" places too, and it's literally just a file swap to get that on the repackaged free version. GTA2 has only GPU related bugs but for the most part it works fine, it'll just crash randomly at times, but that is certainly more playable than GTA1 on newer OS's. Now this issue was raised and brought to Rockstar's attention, but rather than simply dedicate a small amount of people to fix the critical OS related bugs, it was decided it wouldn't be worth the money to pay those people, so instead they just took down the website offering the games and took them off Steam. So you're stuck in a constant loop of being stuck in first time play. On Windows Vista and above, GTA1 has this critical bug where you can start the game and play it ONCE, because once the game tries to save, it can't, then corrupts the save file, and then crashes upon every attempt to restart the game until you delete your save game files and settings for it.

In case anyone wanted to know, Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 were taken down because Rockstar didn't want to patch the games.
